The Midnight Snack program empowers organizations to pack meals and bring hope in the form of food and basic needs to the houseless in O’ahu.
Did you know? The majority of houseless people are awake from midnight to 6:00 AM. These hours are considered some of the most dangerous for individuals living on the streets, where the chances of being involved in a violent situation exponentially increase. To stay safe, individuals choose to remain awake during this time. Through our Midnight Snack program, we ensure that those in need during this dark hour have access to basic needs such as food and toiletries.
HOW IT WORKS
River of Life Mission empowers the community to be a part of the solution to end homelessness in Hawaii. Midnight Snacks are packed and sponsored by partners and volunteers at their own packing events throughout O’ahu and distributed locally to serve those in greatest need. For our volunteers, coming together in a fun, high-energy, and meaningful service event to hand-pack thousands of bags ever year is a life-changing experience. Be a part of the change we all wish to see in Hawaii.
HOST AN EVENT
Your business, school, church, civic group, or other organization can sign up to host your own Midnight Snack packing event at your location.
All across O’ahu, groups recruit their volunteers and work with River of Life’s Midnight Snack team to plan an excellent community-building experience for their people to serve together to provide safety and comfort to those in need.
Your part as the Host is to select a date, time, location, and size of your event, sponsor the bags you will pack at $2 per bag, and recruit your volunteers to come and serve together.
Step 1. Think about the scope of your impact: How many bags do you want to pack, and how many volunteers do you want to engage in this event? Just about anyone can serve; Midnight Snack events are perfect for volunteers as young as two years old! On average, River of Life Mission distributes at least 1,200 Midnight Snack packs a week. One packing event has the potential to impact thousands of lives. Our team will work with you to design the perfect event for your group. There is no minimum event size currently; however, we encourage groups to begin their impact at 1,000 bags.
Step 2. Complete our interest form linked below. One of our team members will connect with you within 48 hours.
Step 3. Meet with our team to begin planning your fundraising goal, discuss logistics, and create a plan for promoting your event. A member of our team will help you every step of the way through the planning process and then arrive at your site with all the things you’ll need.
Step 4. Recruit volunteers. Invite your community and get them excited about coming to serve in a unique mission experience.
Step 5. Get ready to have fun! We’ll bring the snacks and bags, music, and entertainment (or you can provide your own), and hearts ready to serve and share about the impact your community is having by packing bags together.
What goes inside a Midnight Snack bag?
Non-perishable items (soft granola and protein bars, chips, crackers, fruit pouches, and more). Homeless individuals don’t always have easy access to dental care. Therefore, their teeth are often frail; we try our best to accommodate them by providing soft snacks. Many of our guest experience a dietary deficiency which is often found in situations of food insecurity. Because of this, each bag also contains high-quality multivitamin supplement packets since many of our guests don’t get the minimum essential vitamins and minerals. Filling a major dietary deficiency. Providing more than physical food is what we specialize in; inside each bag are also hygiene kits as well as notes of encouragement from our community members.
